Music News

CONGRATULATIONS to the JAZZ BIG BAND AND COMBO for getting a SPECIAL COMMENDATION at the NZSM Jazz festival last weekend. The band got to experience the Wellington Wobble on the third floor of the St James Theatre and did what any musician would do... evacuated with instruments to the car park and continued to play! Over the weekend they had performances, workshops, a music history lecture, as well as visits to Weta Studio, Te Papa, 10 pin bowling and plenty of ping pong at our Silverstream accommodation venue. It was a worthwhile and fun two and half days!

  • Day visit and combined orchestra and band concert at 1.45pm by 78 boys from Sydney Grammar school, Monday Sept 16th
  • Ukuleles, Marimba and Recorders playing at the Strum Strike Blow Festival, Wed Sept 18th in the CBS Arena (rehearsal during the day, performance at 7pm)
  • Jazz Combo gig for ASB Awards Ceremony, Tuesday 12noon Sept 24th

Term 3 music update




There are lots of exciting performances confirmed music dates coming up:

This weekend the jazz band head to Wellington to take part in the NZSM Jazz Festival.

Jazz Combo plays for Child Cancer Ball, Sat, August 31st, early evening.

Ukulele Band guest performance at the Cultural Festival in the CBS Arena, Thursday afternoon, Aug 29th

Jazz Big band, Combo and Irish band playing for Probus, 2pm Monday Sept 2nd

Choir area rehearsal at Christ's College, 9.45-11.45am, Tuesday Sept 3rd

Day visit and combined concert by 78 boys from Sydney Grammar school, Monday Sept 16th

Ukuleles, Marimba and Recorders playing at the Strum Strike Blow Festival, Wed Sept 18th in the CBS Arena (rehearsal during the day, performance at 7pm)

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the both our jazz bands who won silver awards at JazzQuest in the weekend!
That was a fantastic result at this high school competition. It was an enjoyable event and it was great to hear lots of other bands too.

Welcome to term 3




JAZZQUEST will be held this weekend at CPIT Jazz School, corner of Madras and High Streets on the third floor auditorium. It is a gold coin entry for non-players. Our jazz bands are playing on Sunday 4th August at 10am and 12noon. Supporters are welcome. There is Wilson's car parking available on Tuam St near Madras St.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASS - Spaces now open for term 3! We are learning a brand new performance dance this term, new (and current) students are welcome. Every Friday, 3-4pm in the media room. $72 term fee. What's in store for the last couple of weeks of term?



We are in the middle of a busy performance week - 7 roadshows for local schools with Jazz band, Irish band, Feedback and school leaders ... plus a ukulele and Irish gig for Fitzgerald Living Rest home. These have been lots of fun and great experience for everyone.

NZSO Concert opportunity


NZSO and Colin Currie Concert 
The Bold Worlds concert in the CBS Canterbury Arena on Wednesday 10 July at 7.00pm.  It will be an exciting concert with world-renowned percussionist Colin Currie back in New Zealand for the Southern Hemisphere premiere of a new Concerto for Solo Percussion and Orchestra, Sieidi, by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho.
In Aho’s concerto, Currie explores the different timbres of the percussionist’s armoury - darabuka, tom-toms and snare, marimba, wood and temple blocks, vibraphone and tamtam - in a work that is lyrical and brilliantly rhythmic.

Time: 12-3pm
Cost: $10 entry for non-band members
The bands would love lots of enthusiastic supporters so we encourage family and friends to come along!
It also runs on Sat 15th, but our five rock bands are on Sunday 16th - "Rewind", "Feedback", "Gold Rush Crew", "Fallen Sky" and "3-50".
They have had a good preparation week having had a session with Ravil Atlas, an assembly performance and rock night.
